Why are we protesting in Shin-Okubo?
Since we started to visit immigration detention centers last year, we have met many people who were raised in Japan but deprived of their residency status and then detained and deported.
In many of these cases, people were stripped of their residency status for minor offenses, or sometimes even for arbitrary reasons, such as being slightly late in renewing their visa. Despite such trivialities, they were detained at the immigration center, and then forcibly deported.
One person we know well came to Japan when they were 7 years old. They grew up in Japan and had permanent resident status for all their life but have been detained for more than 5 months and are at risk of being deported back to a country they have never lived in as an adult.
Another person we came to know well came to Japan when they were in junior high school and spent more than half of their life in Japan, only to be forcibly deported and have their life destroyed.
Many of those who were born and raised in Japan or came to Japan as a refugee fleeing persecution are deemed as being no longer allowed to stay in Japan due to discriminatory and arbitrary decisions by immigration. They are now in constant fear of being deported.
These people are our friends and neighbors who live side by side with us and compose an essential part of Japanese society.
However, they are being detained and deported simply because they have foreign citizenship, a situation that is destroying the lives of people who have never lived outside of Japan and people who will face persecution if they are forced back.
This is nothing but racism.
The proposed amendment to the Immigration Act which is currently being debated in the National Diet claims to eliminate long-term detention.
However, by criminalizing people who have applied for refugee status more than 2 times, this will only increase the number of people who will be deported and have their lives destroyed in the future.
This is why we now speak out against the racism of deportations.
Let’s gather in Shin-Okubo on 9th April and raise our voices together against racist deportations!
